Arrest Following Racially Aggravated Assault
A man has been arrested following a racially aggravated assault on the Metro in South Shields. At just after 5.25pm on Thursday, police received a report of a woman having been assaulted on the Metro heading towards Tyne Dock. Police attended the Metro station and arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of racially aggravated assault.
He is currently being interviewed by police. The 44-year-old victim suffered a head injury as a result of the incident. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Man Who Tried To Steal Cable From Pylon Pleads Guilty
A man who tried to steal cable from a pylon in Middleton has pleaded guilty to attempted theft and damaging property. Desmond Braidy, 43, of no fixed abode caused £100,000 worth of damage while trying to steal a piece of cable worth just £100. He will be sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on 13 February 2012. After identifying that a series of cable thefts were linked, police worked closely with the National Grid as part of Operation Alloy, Greater Manchester Police’s crackdown on metal theft. On 21 August last year, data readings suggested that a cable had been tampered with on a pylon at Heaton Farm off Heywood Old Road in Middleton. Officers quickly attended the scene and arrested Braidy while he was trying to steal the cable. Superintendent John Graves of Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale Division said: “Thanks to some sterling work by Sergeant Nick Galgani and his team, we were able to bring this offender to justice. We are continuing to work closely with the National Grid, and officers have now plotted the locations of all pylons and substations in the borough to ensure that any future incidents are rapidly dealt with."
Digital Economy To Double By 2016
The value of the web economy amongst G20 countries is to double by 2016, according to Boston Consulting Group. The report said that online transactions would undergo a major increase from $2.3tn (£1.5tn) to $4.2tn (£2.7tn) due to a rapid rise of mobile internet access. The study, commissioned by web giant Google, said that in four years 3bn people will be using the internet, or nearly 50% of the world's population. The research suggests that the UK is one of the most advanced e-commerce economies.

Over the next few weeks British Transport Police (BTP) will be blitzing the Knottingley area with additional officers and patrols in a push to target cable crime. Cable car collision on mountain resort
A number of people have been injured during a collision between two cable cars in a mountain resort in northern Scotland yesterday. It has been reported that one of the carriages was derailed when one gondola slid back down the cable and hit another. It is estimated that the cable car fell about 60ft to the ground.

Police are hunting a man who 'cross-dressed' as an elderly woman to steal £11,000. It is understood that a man disguised himself using a wig, make-up and a camel coat to pose as a 76-year-old and withdraw money from her account.

Car Parking Row Man Dies
A salesman has died after an alleged assault following an argument over a parking space. The 53 year-old man collapsed, shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, after being involved in the fight behind some shops in Griffnock, East Renfrewshire. He later died at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow.
