'NEET' Solution To Teen Unemployment
The latest unemployment initiative launched by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will invite businesses and charities to bid for 'neet' teenagers.
The £126 million payment-by-results scheme, part of the governments Youth Contract announced last November, will invite bids worth up to £2,200 to help 'not in employment, education or training' teenagers, with the most recent figures standing at 1,163,000, almost one in five 16 to 24 years are classified as 'neet'.
Companies and charities taking on young people will receive an initial up-front payment, with further payments as the teenagers show improvements.
"This problem isn't new," said Mr Clegg, "but in the current economic climate we urgently need to step up efforts to ensure some of our most troubled teenagers have the skills, confidence and opportunities to succeed."
