Shard Worker Stuck Outside 72nd Floor

A maintenance man on the tallest building in Europe got stuck in high winds on the 72nd floor yesterday.

Emergency crews attended the scene at the Shard in London days from its official opening to help rescue the man, who was in a cradle that became unsafe, swinging from the side of the building.

Eyewitness Neil Walsh said the window box was "swinging wildly" near the top of the 1,015ft, 78-floor building.

He said: "It was dangling from quite a thin arm and was a few feet away from the building itself, rocking left, right, up and down. The last few days have been windy and it must have been worse up there."

A worker at the Shard said cables were twisted, delaying the rescue operation as the box could not be lifted or dropped easily.

On-site engineers resolved the problem and the worker sat down for a cup of coffee, safe and well.

London Fire Brigade tweeted after the incident: "On site engineers at the Shard have made the window cleaner’s cradle safe and we can all now breathe a sigh of relief."

The Shard, which has 31.4 acres of space, will be officially opened by the Duke of York and Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al Thani, Qatari’s prime minister, on Thursday.
