Government apologises to Royal Marine's widow

The government has apologised to the widow of a Royal Marine killed on the first day of the Iraq war - after the MoD demanded she repay a portion of her dead husband's pay cheque.

Lianne Seymour is expected to meet with Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon today to receive an apology in person.

Mrs Seymour wrote to the Prime Minister last week after a Royal Marine liaison officer requested that nine days wages be repaid following Ian Seymour's death on March 21. Mrs Seymour also claimed that she warned that she may have to vacate her house on the forces base.

The MoD has claimed that an administrative oversight was the source of the problem.

In his written reply, Prime Minister Tony Blair said Lianne, 27, and her three-year-old son Beck would not be expected to move from their home or return the salary. However, Mr Blair had to face an embarrassing time in the Commons and Geoff Hoon was also questioned at a press conference over the matter.

Operator Mechanic Second Class Ian Seymour was among eight personnel from 3 Commando Brigade - along with four US aircrew - who died in an air accident over Kuwait on March 21.

Ian Seymour was buried with full military honours on 9 April after a service at St Michael's Church, in Hamworthy, Poole.
