Michael Winner Dies Aged 77

Director, writer and critic Michael Winner has died, aged 77, his wife Geraldine has confirmed.

Born in 1935 in Hampstead, London, he directed more than 30 films, including Death Wish and Scorpio.

He was also famous for his barbed restaurant reviews, written for The Sunday Times under the banner "Winner's Dinners".

Winner had been ill for some time. Last summer, he said liver specialists had given him 18 months to live.

Snow Closes More Than 5,000 Schools

The fourth day of snow and icy condition across the UK has caused the closure of more than 5,000 schools.

Travel also continues to be affected, with disruption to road and rail journeys.

Flights are currently suspended at Leeds Bradford Airport, and at Heathrow one in 10 flights are cancelled because of poor visibility.

Snow is falling in northern England and southern and eastern Scotland, where the Met Office has amber "be prepared" warnings in force.

Welsh Holiday Maker Wrestles Shark Away From Children

A Welshman on holiday in Queensland in Austrailia has been hailed as a hero after he wrestled a shark in shallow waters away from bathing children.

62-year-old Paul Marshallsea, from Merthyr Tydfil, grabbed the two-metre long shark by the tail on Bulcock Beach and dragged it out to deeper water.

He narrowly missed being bitten as the shark suddenly lunged at his leg.

1,000% loan shark sentenced
A Birmingham loan shark who charged more than 1,000% interest on debts has been sentenced to 150 hours community service. Alan McNally operated the unlicensed money lending operation in the Northfield area of Birmingham after poaching his employer's clients whilst working at a finance company.

World Cup winner Alan Ball dies
England World Cup winner Alan Ball has died at the age of 61. The former Blackpool, Everton, Arsenal and Southampton player collapsed outside his home in Hampshire as he tackled a bonfire. Ball was the youngest member of England's World Cup-winning squad in 1966. He went on to win 72 caps for his country.

Cold weather set to continue
The current cold spell gripping the UK is set to continue, the Met Office has warned, with more snow showers expected across England and Wales today. South East England could see accumulations of snow of between 3 to 7cm, due to persistent snow showers, the Met Office warned.

Snow Grounds Flights At Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport has suspended all flights due to heavy snowfall, which has caused widespread transport disruption across northern England. Despite the flight suspensions, air passengers have been told to continue to travel to the airport as normal as it is hoped the flights will resume as soon as possible.

Airport chaos as police foil terror plot
Airports across Britain are facing major delays, following the disruption of a terrorist plot to blow up flights travelling between UK and the US. It is believed that the plot involved plans to smuggle explosives aboard several airliners with the intention of detonating the device mid-flight.
