WWI graves rediscovered in Al Amara
A cemetery containing the graves of thousands of British dead from WWI has been discovered at Al Amara, on the banks of the River Tigris in Iraq.
The cemetery, which had to be abandoned by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission after the first Gulf War, had been maintained by its keeper Hassan Hatif Moson Ali, without pay, despite death threats from Iraqi regime officials.
The cemetery was discovered by troops of the Royal Irish Regiment, and, ironically, contains names from the regiment's predecessors, the Connaught Rangers.
An unadorned granite cross marks the location, and Royal Irish Regiment Chaplain Phil Bosher is to lead prayers at the site on Easter Sunday.
The Royal British Legion have welcomed the news of the find.
The graveyard, which was stripped of its headstones by a previous Iraqi regime in 1937, will be refurbished with headstones that are being held in storage.
