Tandem Cyclists Killed In Hit And Run Accident
A husband and wife have been killed in a hit-and-run accident at Hanham, Bristol.
32-year-old Ross and 30-year-old Clare Simons died when a car hit their tandem bicycle on Sunday afternoon.
A 38-year-old man was arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the incident and is being held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. A 35-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
It has also been revealed that the car which hit the cyclist may have been being pursued by police.
It is known that shortly before 16.00 on Sunday police were alerted to a Citroën Picasso travelling at speed along the Lower Hanham Road. Despite police signalling it to stop, it carried on and police lost track of the vechicle.
Avon and Somerset police said the matter had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. It is understood this relates to the fact that police were in pursuit of a car before the fatal collision.
A police spokesman: "Very shortly afterwards the car struck another vehicle and then collided with two cyclists on a tandem bicycle."
The man who was in custody handed himself in to police hours after the crash, having initially allegedly left the scene on foot.
