Former BBC Driver Faces Yewtree Charges
A man who was a chauffeur for the BBC is facing charges over a series of alleged sex offences.
The BBC has revealed that David Smith, who is in his sixties, is being charged as part of Operation Yewtree, which was set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.
The charges are being brought under the strand of Operation Yewtree which specifically looks at those offences not directly connected to Jimmy Savile.
It is currently not known if David Smith's alleged offences were committed while he was employed by the BBC.
Mr Smith faces multiple charges: two of indecent assault on a boy under 14, two of gross indecency with a boy under 14 and one of a serious sexual offence against a boy under 16.
The Crown Prosecution Service said all the alleged offences supposedly took place during 1984 and relate to a single victim.
Mr Smith will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 8 May.
So far, 11 people have been arrested as part of Operation Yewtree, which was established by UK police to look into allegations against the late broadcaster and DJ Jimmy Savile.
A Met Police report has described Savile as one of the UK's "most prolific known sexual predators".
Other names being collected in connection with Yewtree include Max Clifford, comedian Freddie Starr, DJ Dave Lee Travis and comedian Jim Davidson.
All deny any wrongdoing.
