Mick Philpott Sentenced To Life
Mick Philpott has been told he will spend a minimum of 15 years in prison, after being sentenced to life for the manslaughter of his six children.
Philpott, his wife Mairead and friend Paul Mosley were found guilty for their part in starting a fire at their home in Derby, which killed their six children as they slept.
Mairead Philpott and Mosley have been given 17-year sentences.
The three started the fire to frame a former mistress of Mick Philpott, Lisa Willis, in a custody battle. However, their plan to rescue the children and emerge as heroes went terribly wrong when five of the children were killed in the fire, and a sixth died in hospital.
The jury at Nottingham Crown Court returned unanimous decisions on Mosley and Mick Philpott.
Mairead Philpott was convicted by a majority.
Families of the accused are reported to have welcomed the guilty verdicts.
The jury had not been told recently-revealed news that Mr Philpott had a previous conviction for attempting to murder a woman who wanted to leave him.
Philpott was 21 at the time, and was convicted of the attempted murder of Kim Hill and of grievous bodily harm to her mother in December 1978.
It is said he used his former conviction as a means to threaten and control the women in his life.
The court heard how in 1991 Mr Philpott attacked someone while working and received a conditional discharge for actual bodily harm.
He was also cautioned in 2010 for slapping his wife in the face and dragging her out of the house.
