Elderly Couple Killed In House Fire
An elderly couple have died following a house fire in Stockton-on-Tees.
The man and woman are believed to be 90 and 88-years old respectively.
The fire was reported to police just after 5am on Thursday and the fire crews remained until shortly after 8.45am. Around 20 firefighters attended the scene, and some 12 crew members went inside the house to tackle the blaze and retrieve the couple. It is thought one of the pair may initially have been alive, but was unable to be resuscitated by the ambulance crews.
Cleveland Police said the investigation is still in the early stages, but they do not believe the fire was started under suspicious circumstances and results of their post mortems are not yet known.
The fire brigade is conducting a joint investigation with the police into the fire but they have been unable to go back into the building due to concerns over its structural stability.
