'Plebgate' Investigation Has Cost £144,000 To Date
Scotland Yard’s “Plebgate” inquiry has cost an estimated £144,000, according to the BBC.
The row, which erupted following accusations that chief whip Andrew Mitchell called police officers “plebs”, and subsequently lead to his resignation, sparked an investigation called Operation Alice.
Mr Mitchell denies claims he called officers "plebs" when they refused to let him leave Downing Street on his bike via the main gate last September.
The cost of the ongoing investigation was disclosed in a letter to Home Affairs Select committee chairman Keith Vaz from a senior police officer.
In the letter, Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Patricia Gallan who is leading the investigation, wrote: "It remains that I have 30 officers at my disposal and the Operation Alice is estimated to have cost £144,000 to date.
"Four people have been arrested and no individual is currently charged. The advice file submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service by the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) has specifically asked for advice and guidance surrounding the future of the investigation in relation to potential criminal charges."
It is understood that detectives are probing claims that police may have lied about the dispute.
