ECHR Ruling Whole-Life Tariff In Breach Of Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that whole-life sentences, without any prospect of release, are a breach of human rights.

The court was ruling on a challenge brought by Jeremy Bamber, Peter Moore and Douglas Vinter.

The three claimed that the denial of any prospect of release was in violation of Article 3 of the ECHR.

The judges, ruling 16 to 1, said that for a life sentence to remain compatible with the Convention there had to be both a possibility of release and a possibility of review.

The court did however, stress that the ruling did not mean there was "any prospect of imminent release".

In response to the ruling David Cameron said that he "profoundly disagrees", adding that he is a "strong supporter of the whole-life tarriffs."

The government now has six months to respond to the ECHR on the ruling.
