Fire at Yorkshire paint factory under control
Firefighters have brought a blaze in a paint storage depot in Easy Yorkshire under control.
The blaze was apparently the result of an explosion in the solvent depot of a paint factory.
Nearby residents said that they heard an explosion at the Baroline paint works in the Swinemore Industrial Estate in Beverely at around 9.00am on Friday morning.
The resulting fire, which was declared a “major incident”, sent a plume of smoke thousands of feet into the air. The Humberside Fire Service deployed almost 200 firefighters to tackle the blaze as smaller explosions rocked the depot.
It is understood that no one was injured in the blast or in the resulting fire, but this afternoon firefighters at the scene were still attempting to fully extinguish fires in and around the immediate vicinity of the depot.
At the height of the blaze thick black smoke from the fire billowed up to 2,000 feet in the air and residents were warned to stay indoors, keeping their windows and doors closed.
Humberside police said that the fumes were not thought to be toxic, but said a number of people were reported to have been treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
When the fire is fully extinguished forensic teams will move in an attempt to establish the cause of the fire.
