Inmates To Be Charged After Holding Prison Officer Hostage
Three prisoners are to be charged for unlawfully imprisoning a prison officer and detaining him against his will, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Feroz Kahn, Fuad Awale and David Watson, all of whom were at that time prisoners at HMP Full Sutton, will be jointly charged with one count of false imprisonment.
A number of demands were made during the incident, on 26 May this year, and the male officer suffered a broken cheekbone. A second officer was also hurt.
The men are to appear via video link at Westminster Magistrates Court later today.

Prison officers suspended over corruption claims

A 49-year-old man has been arrested in north London on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office. The former prison officer is the 83rd person to be detained by the Met's Operation Elveden, set up to investigate illegal payments made to public officials.

A bankrupt former prison officer from Leeds has been given a nine month suspended prison sentence for failing to tell the Official Receiver about his debts and land he owned. Paul Andrew Roberts, a property developer and former prison officer from Wortley pleaded guilty to five charges under the Insolvency Act 1986 at Leeds Crown Court.

A charity for Penal Reform has today released a report recommending that prison officers are educated to degree level in order to better manage prisons and reduce reoffending rates. At present, prison officers undergo eight weeks training before taking responsibility for safety and security within a prison.
