Durham PCC Backs Drug 'Consumption Rooms'
The Police and Crime Commissioner has backed the introduction of "consumption rooms" for drug addicts.
Durham PCC Ron Hogg has said that he believes the facilities, commonly known as "shooting galleries" and which allow addicts to take prescribed heroin legally, would reduce crime and take drugs off the streets.
Pilot schemes of similar facilities have been carried out in Brighton, Darlington and London.
It is understood that the government is reviewing the drug strategies of other countries.
Mr Hogg says that following a successful trial in Darlington, he thinks that consumption rooms should be considered as a way to tackle heroin addiction.
Mr Hogg's comments follow an article published last month in the Observer by Durham Police's Chief Constable Mike Barton in which he called for the decriminalisation of class A drugs.

Sellers of the Big Issue were among 54 people arrested by Merseyside Police today in a crackdown on drug dealing in Liverpool city centre. Operation Manton targeted suspected drug dealers and drug users and 50 men and four women were arrested following a 15-month long investigation by Merseyside Police into drug dealing on the city's streets.

Women Jailed For Life Over Pensioner Torture And Murder
Two women have been found guilty of the torture and murder of retired bus conductor, 67-year-old Barry Reeve. Drug addicts Jodie Barnes, 31, and Kelly Barnes, 32, were convicted at Norwich Crown Court. The court heard that the pair, who are civil partners, believed he had hidden money and tortured him in an attempt to make him reveal his Pin code.

'Troubling' Drug Problem At Durham Prison
Inspectors have found that 1-in-3 inmates at Durham Prison tested positive for drug use. Saying the prison is facing "troubling" drugs problems, in February and June 2011, 33.3% of prisoners tested positive in random mandatory drug testing.
