'Skywalker' Passport Rejected

A woman who added "Skywalker" to her name by deed poll in 2008 has had her new passport renewal application rejected.

Laura Matthews included the Star Wars reference as her middle name on the passport application, but the Home Office has said that it "will not recognise a change to a name which is subject to copyright or trademark".

Adding: "We have a duty to ensure the reputation of the UK passport is not called into question or disrepute."

Man Arrested Over Disturbance At Athletes Village

Police in Glasgow have detained a man following an "incident" at the Athletes' Village.

Police Scotland say that a 30-year-old man is currently in custody in connection with a disturbance at the site in Dalmarnock at about 06:00 this morning (Wednesday).

More Than Five-A-Day Give No Additional Benefit

New research has found that eating more fruit and vegetables than the advised five-a-day has no additional benefit.

Published in the British Medical Journal, it is shown that for every portion of fruit and vegetables consumed, there was a lower risk of premature death, but it also found after five portions a day, there was no further impact.

The research follows recent calls for the recommendation to by upped to seven-a-day, which was thought might prolong lives.

New Passport Design Hits Streets
The first new look UK passport has been issued today to five-year-old Elliot Coutts Miller. Elliot, who attends Shortwood Infant School, Staines in Surrey, received his passport at the London passport office based in Globe House in Victoria.

Trainee pilot jailed on passport charges
A trainee British pilot was jailed for one year today on bogus passport charges. Zayead Christopher Hajaig, 36, from Ilford, Essex, was arrested when he returned from the US where he had sparked a terror alert by attempting to upgrade his pilot's licence while training in Atlanta where the 9/11 suicide bombers had trained as pilots.

With only six weeks to go until the school holidays and the traditional summer holiday exodus, the Identity and Passport Service is calling on all parents and other summer holidaymakers to check now that their passports are in order.

Passport photo standards to come into effect
UK travellers are being reminded that all passport photos will have to comply with new international requirements from next week. The new guidelines, agreed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, have been introduced to help combat fraud.
