Murder Investigation Launched After Woman Found Dead In Wigan
A murder investigation has been launched after a woman was found dead at a house in Wigan.
Just after midnight on Monday, a member of the public reported concerns for the welfare of a woman who lives at a house on Wigan Road, Leigh.
A woman was found deceased in the back garden.
A Home Office post-mortem examination will take place later to establish the cause of death. The woman has not yet been formally identified, but she is believed to be in her late 50s to early 60s.
A 57-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning.
Detective Superintendent Jon Chadwick said: "This investigation remains very much in its infancy and our inquiries are focused on building up a picture of what happened in the weeks, day and hours leading up to this woman's death.
"I understand this may cause concern and unrest in the local community. Clearly I cannot go into specific details of the investigation but I want to try and reassure residents that at this stage, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this woman's death and this appears to be an isolated and tragic incident."
Appeal For Witnesses After Man Dies Following Collision
Police in Nelson are appealing for witnesses after a 73-year-old man died following a collision in a supermarket car park on Monday morning.
The man was driving a blue Honda Jazz car into the car park of Morrisons supermarket in Nelson at around 10.45am.
The car appears to have drifted at low speed and collided with a fixed billboard.
The driver was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where he later died.
Police are investigating the circumstances around the driver's death following the minor collision.
PS Dave Hogarth from East Division Road Policing said: "At this time, we are trying to establish what has happened to the man that has proved fatal and so I would ask anyone who may have witnessed this accident to come forward and speak to us."
Resurfacing Works Announced On The A19 In North Yorkshire
The A19 in North Yorkshire will be closed southbound overnight between Osmotherley and South Kilvington for essential carriageway resurfacing between 31 August and 5 September.
Drivers are being advised that the A19 will be closed between 8pm and 6am to allow for essential resurfacing works to take place.
Drivers wishing to travel southbound will be diverted via A684 Osmotherley Interchange southbound exit slip road, A684 to Northallerton, A168, A19/A61 South Kilvington Interchange entry slip road to re-join the A19 southbound.

A disabled woman found stabbed to death in her car near her home in Harlow, Essex, has been named. Jennifer Macaree was discovered in Hadley Grange on the outskirts of Harlow early on Saturday. Essex Police confirmed she was in the driver's seat of her black Vauxhall Corsa in a parking area near her flat shortly after 3am.

A man and woman are being treated in hospital after being hit by an ambulance car in Cheltenham. According to reports, the two pedestrians, a 32-year-old woman and 30-year-old man, were hit by the car at about 00:20 on Monday morning as it responded to an emergency.

A 'suspicious' man has tried to get into a woman's vehicle while she sat at traffic lights on a rural road in Midlothian, police have said. The incident happened at approximately 1:45am on the B704 near Dalhousie Castle on 23 July. The man was unable to get into the car, which drove off south towards Gorebridge.

Church Asked To Support Fast-Track Women Bishops Law
The first woman bishop in the Church of England could be appointed by Christmas. The general synod supports the legislation to fast-track the revision of the latest proposals and to reduce the time given to individual dioceses. This could lead to a final vote in July with the legislation approved by November.
