Waste Incinerator Given Go Ahead
A waste incinerator that will produce enough power for almost 40,000 homes has been given the go-ahead in East Lothian.
The £177 million plant is to be constructed near Dunbar and will burn more than 300,000 tonnes of waste per year.
Planning consent for the project has been in place since 2010 and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency gave its approval in 2011.
The company behind the incinerator, Viridor, said it expect sthe plant to be operational by the end of 2017.
Around 350 jobs will be created during construction of the plant, with 55 permanent jobs to be created at the facility itself.

A new nuclear power plant to be built in Somerset has been given the go-ahead, marking the beginning of a ‘new generation of nuclear power’. Energy Secretary Ed Davey told MPs in the Commons that he was granting planning consent for French energy giant EDF to construct Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

No charges over bird flu outbreak
Bernard Matthews will not face charges over the outbreak of bird flu at one of its plants, the Food Standards Agency has announced. Following an investigation, the FSA said that there was no evidence that food waste at the site in Holton, Suffolk, had been stored inappropriately.

Power generated by food waste could be in use by the summer, with the opening of the new Waen AD (anaerobic digestion) recycling plant. The £7.5m plant near St Asaph, will take waste from Flintshire, Conwy and Denbighshire, with the capacity to process 22,500 tonnes of food per year and power up to 1,500 homes.
