Motorists Advised To Avoid Area Of Tyre Fire
Motorists have been advised to avoid the Fairglen interchange at Rayleigh and the Carpenters Arms roundabout as smoke from a large tyre fire has reduced visibility.
A stack of tyres more than 160ft long and 6ft tall on a waste storage site have been burning since Monday night. Essex Fire Service has warned that the fire could be a "protracted incident".
Trains to London Liverpool Street, have also been stopped.
Divisional officer Gary Jeffrey, of Essex Fire and Rescue, said: "It is a large pile of tyres which have been tightly bound together at a waste storage site.
"Because the tyres are so densely packed and tightly bound it is proving difficult to get water on to much of the fire.
"We anticipate that this will be a protracted incident."
