Historic Royal Train Station Destroyed By Fire
The Old Royal Station in Ballater, which contained Queen Victoria's waiting room as it was the nearest station to Balmoral, has been destroyed by a fire.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service where called to the scene at about 2am on Tuesday, but despite their best efforts have reported that 90% of the historic building has been destroyed.
The building, opened by the Great Northern Railway in 1866, contained a shop, restaurant and a museum.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service group manager John Morgan said: "On arrival crews were faced with a well-developed fire which had already broken through the roof - and the old structure of the building assisted the fire to spread through the property."
"The crews fought hard to save parts of the museum area."
It is not yet known how many Royal artefacts in the museum have been destroyed.
