Recovered Body Confirmed As Missing POlice Officer
Cumbria Police have confirmed that a body found on Tuesday was that of a missing police officer.
Police searching for Detective Sergeant George Atkinson, recovered his body in the Cogra Moss area.
Mr Atkinson was 46 years old from Springbank, Whitehaven. He was employed as a Detective Sergeant at Cumbria Constabulary, based in west Cumbria.
His death is not being treated as suspicious.
ACC Darren Martland from Cumbria Constabulary said: "George joined Cumbria Constabulary in December 2003, and was based in West CID at the time of his death. His colleagues are being supported during this difficult time, and specially trained officers are working with his family. Our thoughts and sympathies are with those who knew him."

Funding For New Cumbria Bridge
Over £4.6m of Government funding has been made available to build a road bridge over the River Derwent in Cumbria. The new bridge will replace the bridges damaged and destroyed by last year’s flooding. The funding will cover material, design and construction costs and the new bridge is expected to be open by May 2010.

Increase In Knife Robberies, Statistics Show
The number of robberies involving knives rose by 18% between July and September last year, according to new figures released today. The Home Office statistics also showed that domestic burglaries rose by 4% during the same period, while fraud and forgery was up by 16%. Drug offences have also risen by 9%.

PC's Body Found As Floodwater Rages
Search teams in Cumbria have found the body of a police man believed to have been swept away by floods following a bridge collapse. The recovered body was this afternoon identified as PC Bill Barker. The 45-year-old went missing after the Northside Bridge toppled. Assistant Chief Constable Jerry Graham said he was "devastated" by the loss.

Man Held In Cumbria Murder Probe
A man is being questioned on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found in her home in Cumbria at the weekend. The body of 52-year-old Nicola Bisset was found by in her home in Rivington Park in Appleby on Saturday, after North Yorkshire Police received a tip-off. The cause of death is still unknown.
