Two Held Over Alan Street Death
Two men were last night being questioned by police in relation to the death of Alan Street.
Long distance lorry driver Allan Palmer entered an Edinburgh police station yesterday afternoon. The 43-year-old was later arrested by Lancashire police, who travelled up to Scotland to detain him.
His arrest came just hours after Peter Leonard, 51, from Accrington, handed himself over to Burnley police officers after getting in touch with legal representatives.
Lancashire police had issued media appeals for the two men since Saturday December 20, when the blood of Mr Street, 26, was discovered in the front of a house in Stockbridge Road, Padiham.
Mr Street, who was convicted of rape in 1999, was found dead and had been victim of a "sustained and prolonged attack".
His body was eventually discovered on Monday, January 19 by Environment Agency contract workers carrying out examinations on underground culverts beneath Woodnook Mill in Mount Street, Accrington.
Senior investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Neil Hunter, said: "Obviously both arrests are a significant breakthrough in relation to our continuing investigation into the death of Alan Street.
"It is not coincidental that these arrests come after stories in the media on Monday, particularly those relating to the appeals from Leonard and Palmer's friends and family for them to come forward.
"Both men will be kept in custody and questioned over the coming days."
Two other men, Kieran Davison, 20, of Stockbridge Road, and Ian Palmer, 45, of Whitegate Close, both Padiham, have already been charged with murder.
