Volkswagen Sales Plummet In UK

Sales of Volkswagen brands in the UK – including Seat, Skoda and VW – have fallen in the UK in the last month. The figures, published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), come around six weeks after the emissions scandal.

In September, the Environmental Protection Agency in the US discovered that software installed in cars with a specific VW diesel engine, had cheated emissions tests. The Volkswagen group later admitted that some 11 million cars were affected by the issue. More recently, the investigation also now includes "irregularities" in carbon dioxide emissions – an issue thought to affect 800,000 cars in Europe.

The latest statistics found that sales of VW branded cars fell by 9.8%, Skoda declined by 3% and Seat sales dropped 32.2%. Elsewhere, though, there were increases in the number of sales of Audi, Bentley and Porsche cars. Last month, the VW brand sold 13,970 cars – down from 15,495 in October 2014. Of the Volkswagen Group brands SMMT collects statistics for, sales fell by about 6% overall.

However, new car registrations for Vauxhall plummeted 16%, and Ford's sales fell by almost 9% in October. In general, car sales in the UK in October fell by 1.1%. It follows 43 consecutive months of growth.
