Vauxhall To Recall Thousands Of Zafiras

Vauxhall has said it is to recall 220,000 Zafira B vehicles.

The announcement comes after a number of the cars were discovered to have caught fire.

Last month, a Facebook group raised the issue and it was found that more than 130 fires had been reported. The issue was then followed by BBC consumer rights' programme Watchdog.

It is understood the fires have occurred behind the vehicle's glove-box, in the heating and ventilation system. The company has said it is too early to speculate about the cause of the problem, but faulty repairs to the heating and ventilation system could be to blame.

The affected model is the Zafira B, built between 2005 and 2014.

The cars are right-hand drive, and have manual – or no – air conditioning.

In a statement, Chairman and Managing Director Rory Harvey said initial investigations had revealed an "improper repair of the blower motor resistor and its thermal fuse."

Vauxhall will send letters to 220,000 owners, advising them to contact their local dealer. They will be offered a free inspection and repairs.

It added that the issue will be investigated "very thoroughly and with the utmost urgency", but it could take some time as a number of the cars examined have been left damaged "beyond investigation".
