Four die in Liverpool's 'worst crash this year'
Four people were killed last night in what emergency services have described as "one of the worst road crashes seen in Liverpool this year".
The victims, who were all in their 60s, were travelling in a silver Vauxhall Corsa which smashed through metal barriers on Great Howard Street and landed on its roof in a ditch created by roadworks.
The incident happened at the junction of Boundary Street after the car was in collision with a blue Ford Fiesta shortly before 7.20pm.
The three women and one man, whom police believe were related, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the male driver of the Corsa, in his mid-60s, was taken to Aintree Hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the Fiesta - a man in his 30s who was the sole occupant of the car - suffered serious but not life-threatening leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital. The Corsa plummeted into the 4ft ditch near to an ATS garage.
One of the first at the scene was Mike Jackson, director of clinical care at Mersey Regional Ambulance Service, who said "When I got there, it was carnage. There was nothing the crews could do as the four in the car in the ditch were pronounced dead at the scene. Some of the crews said they had been out before on serious jobs on that stretch of road.”
Eyewitness Keith Hulse, 33, from Old Swan, said: "I heard a massive bang and I dropped everything and ran outside. I came out and saw what looked like a Corsa on its roof in a ditch and a Fiesta parked up nearby. One of the drivers had got out and was wandering about dazed clutching his head."
The programme of road works began in August and is due to continue for seven months. Police closed off Great Howard Street and several other roads as more than a dozen emergency vehicles arrived at the scene.
In the last five years, there have been numerous accidents and several deaths along Great Howard Street.
