Teen bailed following assault on 97-year-old woman

A teenager has been released on police bail today following his arrest in connection with a police inquiry into a vicious assault on a 97-year-old pensioner in Manchester last Friday.

The 14-year-old boy has been released on bail until Monday December 15 pending further enquiries.

The 97-year-old was punched and beaten last Friday lunchtime after she answered a knock to the door of her flat in Bickerdike Court on Erneley Close, Manchester. The assailant then ran into her home and stole a quantity of cash.

The victim was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary where she is in a "stable but poorly condition".

Speaking about the attack DI Mark Willdigg from Longsight CID said: "This was a disgusting and despicable attack on a frail and defenceless elderly lady. The force in which she was punched caused her to break her hip and her jaw and she is now awaiting surgery.

"This woman was in her own home when she was subjected to this vicious attack and I am appealing to the public to help us catch the person responsible."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crimestoppers.
