Scotland's tallest building planned for Glasgow

Plans for high-rise flats in Glasgow could see the construction of what would become Scotland’s largest building.

The £100 million planning proposal would see the 440 feet high, 39-storey building become a dramatic addition to the Glasgow skyline, beating the proposed 436ft skyscraper under consideration for Leith Docks in Edinburgh.

To be built on the site of the old Strathclyde Regional Council Headquarters near St Vincent Street, the building will tower over the nearby M8.

The building, to be called Elphinstone Place, will include shops at pavement level, over 200 luxury flats, nearly 21,000 square metres of office space and leisure facilities, which will include a pool.

Conceived by Elphinstone, a Glasgow-based group of private companies specialising in residential and commercial developments, the group are confident that the project will get a green light.

The company recently completed a £20 million refurbishment of City Park, the former Wills Tobacco Factory in the East End of Glasgow.

Ken Ross, Chief Executive of Elphinstone, said: “The scale of this development is a symbol of Glasgow’s growing confidence and we look forward to creating landmark buildings of which we can all be proud.”

Architect Alan Clarke, Project partner of Cooper Cromar Architects, told Scotland Today: “Once you are in the apartment, the views will be stunning because we have an elaborate glass facade. So that with every view you will be able to look around the city.”

If these plans get the go ahead the old Council site will be demolished to make way for the new development ready in 2006, with a view for completion by 2007.
