Government figures show rise in pension credit uptake
The total number of pensioners benefiting from the Pension Credit has almost topped 3 million, following a rise of 54,000 in April, according to government figures published today.
The Pension Credit guarantees every person over the age of 60 a weekly income of at least £105.45 or £160.95 for a couple. It also rewards people for some of the savings they have put away for their retirement.
The average weekly payment in April was £41.67 and most people are now getting more money than they did under the old minimum income guarantee, a government spokesperson said.
The government has written to every pensioner household to tell them about the Pension Credit. Extra amounts are added for people who have relevant housing costs, severe disabilities or caring responsibilities.
People can apply by calling a free helpline on 0800 99 1234, or using a textphone service on 0800 169 0133.
