Attack on PM highlights need for Home Security post: Tories

The Conservatives have said that yesterday's flour-bomb attack on the Prime Minister reinforced the argument that a government minister dedicated to Homeland Security be appointed.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said the "disgraceful" incident demonstrated a dangerous degree of complacency about security.

He said: "This incident is profoundly disturbing in the current security situation. In the same week as the Windsor security alert, it is clear that there are serious security concerns which have still not been addressed. Today is just another example of where security has failed and incompetence has prevailed."

Mr Davis added: "Two things are clear - firstly, Britain needs a Homeland Security Minister now. Secondly, we need to educate everyone about contingency planning, both MPs and the wider public."

Lib Dems leader Charles Kennedy said that it was "a matter of real concern" that protesters were able to launch such an attack.

He added: "This kind of protest must also be condemned. Disrupting the democratic process of the country - the weekly opportunity for MPs to question the Prime Minister about key issues of the day on behalf of the electorate - cannot be justified. It's a democratic disgrace.'"

Liberal Democrat Shadow Leader of the House, Paul Tyler, said that he will today be urging his opposite number Peter Hain to review access to the Palace of Westminster. He will also call for a delay on any final decisions over the positioning of the security screen until that is complete.
