Car thieves behind airport death are jailed
Two car thieves who admitted killing a man who tried to stop them stealing his car have been jailed at Liverpool Crown Court today.
Dean Taylor, 17, of no fixed abode, and Craig Abbott, 21, of Carley Walk, Speke, were both jailed for seven-and-a-half years for manslaughter and conspiracy to steal.
A third man, Neil Dolan, 20, of Yeardon Walk, Speke, was jailed for four years for conspiracy to steal.
Michael Howard, a 57-year-old father of three, from Preston in Lancashire, died outside the departures terminal of John Lennon Airport on January 6 this year.
Mr Howard was unloading luggage from the rear of his car, and his wife Elaine had gone to get a baggage trolley, when Dean Taylor jumped into the driver's seat. Mr Howard ran to the front of the vehicle to stop it being driven away, but he was run down.
Taylor then abandoned the Volvo and escaped in a maroon coloured car driven by Craig Abbott.
Emergency vehicles attended at short time later but Mr Howard died at the scene.
Reacting to the sentencing, Elaine Howard said that she was disappointed that the maximum sentence of 10 years had not been handed down to the pair.
