Olympic rowing champion Pinsent bows out
A few months after winning his fourth Olympic Gold Medal Matthew Pinsent, one of Britain's premier rowers in recent years has announced his retirement.
Pinsent, who at 34 has had an illustrious career spanning 12 years remained unbeaten at major championships until 2003. Following an emotional victory over favourites Canada in Athens last August which saw the coxless team including James Cracknell, Ed Coode and Steve Williams take the gold by 0.08 of a second, Pinsent hinted at retirement.
He signed up with Steve Redgrave at 19 and helped him win three of his five consecutive Olympic titles. Noted more for his power and commitment than natural technique, the Olympic champion admitted that he had lost the desire to train since August.
Pinsent along with his team mates overcame a difficult season fraught with injuries and crew changes in the run up to the Olympics to claim their sensational win over world champions, Canada.
After Steve Redgrave's retirement in 2000 he reverted to competing in the coxless pair with James Cracknell, but failed to emulate his previous successes, recording a disappointing fourth place at the world championships in 2003.
The pair controversially transferred to the four, although their dramatic win at Athens captivated the British public.
