Minister announces satisfactory primary school performances

According to latest figures primary school pupils in Britain are continuing to score higher marks in English and Maths.

The news is a far cry from 1997 when statistics showed a staggering third of 11-year-old pupil in Britain's schools failed to achieve accepted standards.

Across the country this year, 78% of 11-year-olds achieved level 4+ in English, up three points from 2003 and 74% in maths, up one point from 2003.

Schools Minister Stephen Twigg praising the performancessaid: "Today's results show that primary schools are making huge strides. Parents and pupils can be confident that standards in schools are getting even better. I would like to congratulate the teachers and pupils of Heath Mount Primary School in Birmingham and Orrets Meadow Primary School in Wirral for coming joint top in value added performance. And well done to Sherington Primary School in Greenwich, for making the most sustained improvement in the country since 2001. You should all be delighted with these results which are a tribute to all your hard work."

Under two key support programmes for primary schools, the Primary Leadership and Intensifying Support Programmes, it has emerged that participating schools have improved faster than other schools.

Mr Twigg pointed out that it was especially encouraging that some of the best performing primary schools are located in deprived areas. Schools in Lambeth, Birmingham, Newham and Hackney are contending with the extra challenge of financial and social deprivation and the Minister said it clearly demonstrated that poverty need not be a barrier to success.
