Coastguard searches for missing crewman
Solent Coastguard were conducting a search for a missing crewman at Newhaven Harbour last night.
The man, from the Sardinia Vera, was reported missing at 11pm last night . He was last seen filling the fresh water tanks on the vessel, which was along side at Newhaven Port Control, around 10pm.
A Coastguard rescue helicopter fitted with forward-looking infra red search equipment, was immediately scrambled, while Coastguard rescue teams from Newhaven and Birling Gap, conducted a shore line search of the area and Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat and its tender boat searched the water.
An intensive seach of the harbour area was carried out, as well as a search two miles upriver, on account for an incoming tide. But, apart from his cap, which found in the water close to the vessel, there was no sign of the crew member.
Divers were due to conduct a seach under and around the vessel today.
