Police launch fresh appeal for mother of dead baby

Cardiff police have issued a fresh appeal for information, following the discovery of the body of a newborn baby in the Splott area of the city on January 29.

Police do not know if the mother is an adult or a young teenager and concerns are growing for her safety.

The baby is believed to have been at full-term when it was born and an investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the birth. A team of 20 police offices are also conducting house-to-house inquiries, and visiting schools and health centres in a bid to locate the child's mother.

Detective Chief Inspector, Paul Kennedy, who is in charge of the investigation, appealed for help from the public in identifying the baby's mother. He said: "At this time we are extremely concerned for the welfare of the baby's mother and our priority is to ensure her safety. It is clear that the baby is recently born. We are appealing for the help of the public for information about the identity of the mother or the child, or for anyone who knows of an expectant mother who should be full-term, but appears in distress, to contact us.

DCI Kennedy also appealed for the mother to get in contact with the police herself. He added: "If the mother hears this appeal, then we urge her to contact us immediately to ensure her well-being. She may need urgent medical attention."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Fairwater incident room on 02920 571503.
