Employment figures on the increase
The number of people being employed across the UK has shown an increase, according to latest figures.
This month's figures show an increase in the number of people in employment but a fall in the employment rate. The number of people in employment rose by 58,000 over the quarter.
The unemployment rate was 4%, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous quarter. The number of unemployed people rose by 72,000 over the quarter.
The claimant count, meanwhile, was 902,000, up 10,500 from the previous month.
The working age employment rate was 74.7% in the three months to October 2005, down 0.1 percentage point from the three months to July 2005 but unchanged from a year earlier. The employment level was 28.81 million in the three months to October 2005, up 58,000 from the three months to July 2005 and up 326,000 on a year earlier.
The number of people in full-time employment was 21.5 million in the three months to October 2005, up 81,000 from the three months to July 2005. Of this total, 13.88 million were men, up 31,000 over the quarter, and 7.62 million were women.
The number of people in part-time employment was 7.32 million in the three months to October 2005, down 23,000 from the three months to July 2005. Of this total, 1.65 million were men and 5.66 million were women.
Workforce jobs were 30.82 million in September 2005, up 9,000 over the quarter and up 261,000 on a year earlier. Over the year to September 2005 production industries workforce jobs were down 129,000, service sector jobs up 307,000 and other industries up 83,000.
There were 26.64 million employee jobs in September 2005, down 8,000 over the previous quarter.

The rate of manufacturing in the UK grew faster than expected in the month of February, new statistics have revealed. According to the Markit/CIPS Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), employment within the sector is now expanding at its fastest rate in almost three years. Last month, the Index reached 56.9, up from 56.
