Germany confirms first bird flu cases
German authorities have confirmed the first cases of the H5N1 flu virus in two dead swans found on the island of Reugen on the Baltic coast.
This follows on the deadly virus being reported in Austria, Greece, Italy and Iran, which have recently reported cases.
Earlier, Austrian officials reported two cases in swans found dead near Graz.
In Iran veterinary officials said that 135 swans found dead in the Anzali marshlands had contracted the virus.
Most of the recent deaths have been reported in migratory swans.
European veterinary experts plan to hold crisis talks to consider the implications of the latest outbreaks.
There are concerns that the virus may spread with migratory birds movements and plans for increased monitoring of birds have been put in place.
Sweden and Denmark have ordered all poultry to be housed indoors as a precautionary measure.
At least 90 people are known to have died after contracting the H5N1 strain of bird flu.
