Search launched for missing angler
A major search is underway to find an angler who went missing off Holyhead this morning.
Holyhead Coastguard were alerted after a 50-year-old man, who had set out from Holyhead in a nine foot green inflatable dingy, powered by a battery operated outboard engine, went missing. He was last seen at 7am on Thursday morning.
Contractors working on the breakwater have also reported to the Coastguard that no one has been seen in the local vicinity since 8am.
An upturned partially inflated vessel, which was located between Fiddlin Bay and Carmel Head around lunchtime, was confirmed to be the missing dinghy. The search is continuing for the missing man who was wearing a blue and black wet suit, but not a life jacket. It is also understood that the man - who can swim - has no other form of communication with him, such as a mobile phone or hand-held VHF.
Various Coastguard rescue teams, including those from Holyhead, Moelfre and Cemaes have been called out and initially sent to the breakwater area to conduct a search.
The Holyhead inshore lifeboat has been requested to launch to help search near the seaward side of the breakwater and along the rocky coastline to the north. The all-weather lifeboat has been launched and is running a search pattern seawards from the harbour.
A RAF helicopter has also been sent to the area to conduct an offshore search.
Jim Green, Watch Manager at Holyhead Coastguard, said: "There is currently a strong tide inshore and at this time we are dividing our rescue resources in order to cover the coastline area as far round Anglesey as possible. With the aircraft on scene and the all-weather lifeboat searching and despite the poor weather conditions, we are attempting to cover the track this man and his dinghy may have taken."
