'Super-casino' shortlist revealed
The shortlist of possible sites to host Britain's first Las Vegas-style super-casino has been announced.
The eight sites on the shortlist are: Blackpool, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Wembley Stadium and the London's Millennium Dome.
One of the sites will be chosen to host the super-casino, which will have a minimum customer area of 5,000 square metres and feature 1,250 slot machines with unlimited jackpots.
There will also be licenses for 16 large and small casinos. The large casinos will have a minimum customer area of 1,000 sq m and up to 150 slot machines with jackpot limits of £4,000, while the small casinos will have a customer area of at least 750 sq m and up to 80 slot machines, also with jackpot limits of £4,000.
Thirty-one places are on the shortlist for the licenses for the large and small casinos, including Bath & North East Somerset, Bournemouth, Brighton, Canterbury, Leeds, Leicester, Luton, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Scarborough, Southampton, Swansea, Torbay and Wolverhampton.
Panel Chairman Professor Stephen Crow said that the competition had been "very strong."
The Casino Advisory Panel will make its final decisions by the end of the year.
Eight super-casinos were originally planned but the government was forced to scrap the plans following widespread opposition to the plans.
The announcement of the shortlist was made as a gambling advice charity revealed an increase in the number of addicts seeking help.
GamCare said that the number of people contacting them for counselling increased by 41.3% between 2004 and 2005, to just over six and a half thousand people.
The charity also said that more than a quarter of the addicts using their website forum were now women.

Dawlish Rail Line To Reopen Next Month
Network Rail has said the railway line connecting the South West to the rest of the UK will reopen on 4 April. The Dawlish rail line was damaged in severe storms last month, when consistently large waves battered the structure and left the tracks suspended in mid-air.

A man and his son had to be rescued when the yacht they had bought on eBay was washed onto rocks in Guernsey. The novice sailors had gone to collect the boat and decided to try and move it just 700 metres from a marina to a neighbouring harbour.

Britons advised to leave war-torn Haiti
British nationals have been advised to leave Haiti "if they can do so safely" over fears that rebel forces are preparing to march on the nation's capital. The Foreign Office today revised its travel advice for Haiti to advise Britons to leave the country – it has advising against all travel to Haiti since 13 February.
