Tube passengers trapped on train

Nearly 150 Tube passengers were trapped underground for more than two hours early on Tuesday morning.

A signal failure halted the Victoria Line train at around 0020 BST on Tuesday morning, then an electrical fault prevented the train from restarting.

The passengers were eventually evacuated around 0200 BST and led along the track, with the last of the 146 passengers arriving at Highbury and Islington station around 50 minutes later.

A spokesperson for London Underground said: "None of the passengers needed medical assistance and buses and taxis were laid on to get them all home.

"This incident is under investigation and we would like to apologise to passengers for any inconvenience caused."

However, Geoff Pope, chairman of the London Assembly Transport Committee described the incident as "shocking". He said: "There appears to be an increasing number of cases of Tube passengers being trapped on trains.

"Underground users are fed-up with excuses and delays. Passengers just want an improved service and their safety is paramount."

Mr Pope said that Tube passenger and maintenance company Metronet needed to make improvements to the service.
