Pupils fall foul of World Cup fake ticket scam
A number of schoolchildren who travelled to Germany to see a World Cup match have returned home after falling foul of a fake ticket scam.
More than 300 children, who come from schools across the UK, had travelled to Germany on Friday, in order to watch World Cup games on Saturday. Match tickets should have been included in the children's £410-per-head tour, but when they arrived in Germany they were told that they were no tickets.
The trips had been booked through tour operator Activ4, who had paid a supplier for the match tickets. The company said that police in both the UK and Germany had been notified and said that they would hold an emergency meeting in order to establish what happened.
Thirty boys from Portchester Boys School in Bournemouth, Dorset, who were meant to see Portugal play Iran, and 23 boys from Maryville High School, Portsmouth, who were due to see the Czech Republic play Ghana, returned home on Monday morning.
The pupils were reportedly "devastated" by what had happened.
Speaking to the Press Association, FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren said that the situation was "absolutely regrettable".
FIFA has again urged people to ensure that tickets are only purchased from official sources.
