Fatalities in M25 smash
Kent police have confirmed that a serious road crash with four fatalities has occured on the M25 near junction 5.
Rescue services were called to the scene at 10.35am and there are understood to be a four dead at the scene.
The driver of an HGV was taken to Farnborough hospital, Orpington, suffering from chest injuries and shock.
The incident involving a car and a lorry has caused a 15-mile tailback and closed the anti-clockwise carriageways. The lorry burst into flames following the crash.
There are serious traffic tailbacks on the clockwise lanes and only two of the three lanes are open.
Police said that following the fire which has damaged the carriageway the road surface will have to be examined by other road agencies before the lanes could be reopened.
The M25 remains closed at junction six anti-clockwise.
The collision means there is severe traffic congestion in the area. Traffic is queuing back to junction three of the M26 and surrounding roads are also congested.
Police are urging motorists not to travel in the area unless absolutely necessary.
