British soldier dies in Afghanistan
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that a British soldier died in Afghanistan on Sunday.
The soldier who has not yet been named, from 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, died as a result of injuries sustained during a fire fight in Sangin, northern Helmand Province at around midday local time.
A spokesperson for the MoD confirmed that three other British soldiers were injured in the incident but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Secretary of State for Defence Des Browne said: "I was deeply saddened to be informed of the death today of a British soldier and the injuries of three others as they supported the NATO mission in Afghanistan. I wish to express my sincere condolences to their families and friends. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
Since 2001, 20 British armed forces personnel have died in Afghanistan.
The number of troops in Afghanistan is to be increased to 4.500.
There are currently almost 30,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan as part of the Nato presence fighting Taleban militia and local drugs lords.

The female soldier killed in Afghanistan has been praised as a "hero" by her husband. The soldier, from Cumbria, has been named as Sergeant Sarah Bryant. Cpl Bryant's husband and fellow soldier, Carl, said his wife was "a truly special person who died a hero".

A British Soldier has died while taking part in a parachute training expedition in Germany, it has been announced. Cpl Ali Woodford, 26, based in Beachley Barracks in Gloucestershire, died on 29 September. He had previously served as a heavy machine gun operator in Afghanistan and was a soldier in 1st Battalion The Rifles.
