Hand luggage restrictions eased

Restrictions on hand luggage at UK airports, imposed after the discovery of an alleged terrorist plot to blow up transatlantic airliners, are to be relaxed from Friday.

After the alleged plot was foiled in August, a total ban on hand luggage on flights leaving the UK was imposed.

However, after a few days, passengers were allowed to carry one piece of luggage - the size of a laptop computer bag - onto flights.

The luggage restrictions led to the cancellation of thousands of flights and long delays at airports across the country.

However, on Thursday, the government announced that the restrictions would be relaxed.

From Friday, passengers will be able to take bags measuring 22in x 18in x 10in on board flights.

Musical instruments, which do fit the permitted size of cabin luggage, will also be allowed as a second item of cabin baggage after they are screened.

Electrical equipment, such as laptops, will also be allowed in the cabin, but will have to be taken out of bags to be screened separately.

A ban on carrying liquids in hand luggage remains in place.

Only essential medications and baby milk and food will be allowed in the cabin.

The Department of Transport said that travellers should still allow time for extra security checks when planning their journeys.

The relaxation of the restrictions has been welcomed by airlines, including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
