Smoke breaks banned by council

A district council is to ban employees from taking cigarette breaks.

West Lancashire District Council voted in favour of a complete ban on smoking in its building and outside council premises.

Staff will only be able to smoke during their lunch breaks, but will not be able to do so in or near council buildings.

Those who ignore the ban, which is due to come into force next March, could face losing their jobs, the council warned.

Help is to be provided in order to help staff give up smoking, including counselling and smoking cessation classes.

Leader of the council, Councillor Geoff Roberts, said that the decision on the proposal had been unanimous, and should be agreed by the full council next month. He said: "We are going to do all we can to help them cope with this. The whole issue is based upon the care and concern for our staff."

However, the ban has been criticised by smokers' rights group Forest, which said that it was a "complete overreaction".
