Chancellor 'upbeat' over son's disease
Chancellor Gordon Brown has said that he is upbeat about his four-month-old son Fraser's future after it was revealed that he has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
A spokesperson for Mr Brown and his wife Sarah said that the couple were told that Fraser might have the disease, a common hereditary disease which affects the lungs and pancreas, shortly after he was born in July. Tests have now confirmed that the child has the condition.
However, the spokesperson said that Fraser was "fit and healthy and making all the progress that you would expect any little boy to make." He said: "Thousands of other parents are in the same position. They are confident that the advice and treatments available, including proper exercise and, later, sporting activity will keep him fit and healthy.
"The NHS is doing a great job, and Gordon and Sarah are very optimistic that the advances being made in medicine will help him and many others, and they hope to be able to play their part in doing what they can to help others.
The Chancellor has received messages of support from both political allies and opponents. Conservative leader David Cameron was among the first to offer his support. Mr Cameron, whose four-year-old son Ivan has cerebral palsy, said: "Sam and I are thinking of Gordon and Sarah and their family at this time and we send them our best wishes for the future."
The Browns' first-born child - a daughter named Jennifer Jane - died in 2002 after being born prematurely. They also have another son called John.

A mother, who killed her autistic son by making him drink bleach, has been jailed. In February, Ajit Singh-Mahal, 12, was found dead at the family home in Barking, east London. He was killed just hours after his mother, Satpal Kaur-Singh, 44, refused to co-operate with council staff at a meeting over his care.

The death of a soldier killed in Iraq has been blamed on former PM, Tony Blair. The dead soldier’s mother said she held Blair personally responsible as the inquest into his death resumed. Fusilier Gordon Gentle, 19, was killed on patrol in Basra on June 28, 2004, and his mother Rose has blamed Army ‘neglect’ for his death.

A mother with a drug addiction, who gave her two-year-old son methadone to make him sleep, has been found guilty of manslaughter. Kelly Emery, 34, was sentenced to six years in prison for killing Fenton Hogan. However, she was cleared of child cruelty.
