Tube gang jailed for robberies

Four members of a gang of armed robbers who carried out up to 150 attacks on Tube passengers have been jailed indefinitely.

The gang, who called themselves the Kensal Green Tribe, were led by Donnel Carty and Delano Brown, who were jailed for life last year for the murder of City lawyer Tom ap Rhys Price, who was stabbed to death near Kensal Green Tube station for his mobile phone, Oyster travel card and £20.

At London's Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court on Tuesday, Toyan Vassall, 18, from Stanmore, Ishmael Cowell, 23, Harry Bees, 17, both from Harrow, Kariem Al-Ebadi, 18, from Willesden, all north-west London were all convicted of conspiracy to rob for a series of attacks between December 2005 and January 2006.

Vassall, Cowell and Bees were also found guilty of three charges of wounding with intent.

The court heard how the gang carried out 150 attacks within a period of eight months, rampaging through Tube trains like a "pack of animals" while stealing valuables such as MPS players, mobile phones and cash from passengers.

The court also heard how several victims were stabbed or beaten, while others were issued with death threats.

One woman was also held at gunpoint and threatened with rape if she refused to hand over her valuables.

At sentencing, Judge Henry Blacksell QC said that it was one of the worst robbery sprees of its kind that he had ever heard of. He branded the defendants as "cowards and bullies".
