Man charged over double killing
A 47-year-old man has been charged in connection with the murders of a disabled woman and her care worker in Southampton.
David Tiley, from Southampton, was arrested in Swanage in Dorset on Saturday morning, in connection with the murders of Sue Hale, 49, and Sarah Merritt, 39.
The bodies of the two women were discovered in Ms Hale's flat in Meggeson Avenue in Southampton last Thursday afternoon.
Post-mortems revealed that both women died from stab wounds.
The bodies were discovered when Mrs Merritt, a careworker whose employer was contracted to Southampton City Council, was reported missing by both her employer and her husband.
A statement issued by Mrs Merritt's husband Peter, 41, described her as a "kind and loving person". He said: "She was a loving mother to our two children and always strived to do the best for her family. As well as my wife she was my best friend."
Mrs Hale, a mother of five, suffered from cerebellar ataxia, a rare degenerative brain disorder which affected her mobility. A statement issued by her family described her as a "happy, outgoing and bubbly person". The statement said: "Despite the challenges that her disability posed, she always faced them with humour and dignity."
Mr Tiley, 47, is due to appear before Alton magistrates on Tuesday afternoon.
