Man jailed for murder of fiancée and carer
A man who murdered his disabled fiancée and her carer has been jailed for life.
David Tiley, 47, pleaded guilty to killing Sue Hale, 49 and her carer, Sarah Merritt, 39, in Southampton in March this year.
The bodies of Mrs Hale, a mother-of-five who suffered from a degenerative brain disorder, and Mrs Merritt were discovered in Mrs Hale's flat in Meggeson Avenue on March 15.
Mrs Hale suffered from cerebellar ataxia, a rare degenerative brain disorder, which made it difficult for her to walk.
The court heard how Tiley lived in the flat he shared with Mrs Hale with her body for more than a week. He had stabbed her and also sexually assaulted her.
When Mrs Merritt came to the flat for a regular appointment with Mrs Hale, Tiley tied her up and took her cash card to withdraw £150, before returning to the flat, where he raped and stabbed her.
At Winchester Crown Court on Thursday, Mr Justice Irwin sentenced Tiley to life imprisonment and said: "The brutality and evil of what you did defies adequate description."
Hampshire Police have confirmed that Tiley, who had previously been jailed for rape offences, was being monitored as a sex offender at the time of the murders. A review is now under way.
