Teenage sisters killed in house fire

Two teenage sisters have been killed in a house fire in South Tyneside.

The girls, aged 12 and 14, died when a blaze broke out at the house in Lisle Road in South Shields around 1am on Wednesday morning.

A 37-year-old man, understood to be the girls' father, suffered serious burns and is being treated at Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary. A 37-year-old woman, understood to be the girls' mother, was treated for less serious injuries at South Tyneside Hospital.

The bodies of the girls were found in first and second floor rooms in the house.

A 17-year-old male youth was arrested on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of murder in connection with the fire.

An investigation is underway to establish both the cause of the deaths and the fire.

Post-mortems are due to take place on Thursday morning.
