'Neighbour from hell' pensioner jailed for six months

An 81-year-old woman dubbed the "neighbour from hell' has been jailed for six months.

Dorothy Evans had been convicted of harassment and six breaches of her Asbo, but failed to turn up at Cardiff Crown court on Monday for sentencing.

Evans, from Abergavenny, Manmouthshire, said that she was unwell and had to attend hospital for blood tests.

Judge Roderick Denyer QC said that Evans' prison sentence was shorter because of her age and said that she would serve a minimum of three months in prison.

However, he said that if she had been younger, the sentence would have been longer, saying that she had made her neighbours' lives "a misery" for the past ten years.

Evans was convicted of offences against her next-door neighbours, Roberto and Angela Casa, between January and June 2006.

The court heard how Evans had called Mrs Casa a prostitute and hit her with her walking stick, told her husband to go back to Italy and told the couple's 13-year-old daughter that she was a witch and would cast a spell on the family and kill her pet dog.

The court also heard that Evans had a string of previous convictions involving neighbourhood disputes, which involved four previous convictions for harassment and eight convictions for breaching a restraining order between 1999 and 2005.

She was given an Asbo in May 2005, which prevented her from causing alarm, harassment or distress to neighbours in Park Crescent or anyone in Gwent. That Asbo will also remain in place.

The court also heard how Evans had failed to attend a meeting with the probation service in March, which breached a condition of bail.
